Unmanned vehicles are being systematically integrated into our daily lives. Self-driving cars, pilotless aircraft, ships without navigators – all of these are now reality. A device is considered unmanned when it operates either autonomously (according to programming) or via remote operator control. This technology was initially deployed in military applications. Ground and aerial drones actively participate in reconnaissance operations. However, are they harmless? Only at first glance, as they are increasingly being used for illegal purposes. The threats posed by drone activities have become evident. A current challenge is protecting critical infrastructure facilities and mass events.

However, solutions are now available that enable the detection, monitoring, and neutralization of these unmanned aerial vehicles.

Advanced Drone Counter-System Technology

To effectively protect against drones, they must first be detected with precise location identification before countermeasures can be initiated. Radar systems can not only detect drones at distances of several kilometers but also determine their range and direction.

3D radar systems guarantee efficient tracking of unmanned aerial vehicles within a 360-degree sphere at distances of 3 to 5 kilometers. Equipped with innovative radar sensors (FMCM), they provide reduced information processing frequency. The 3D RADAR, through MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology and multi-antenna transmission, enables more precise object detection.

The most advanced drone counter-systems currently operate using MHT (Multi-Hypothesis Tracking) technology for multi-sensor tracking and automatic verification of collected data. The radar data conversion occurs in the onboard computer unit, enabling differentiation between drones and other moving objects, significantly reducing false alarms.

Radar Significance in Drone Counter-Systems

Radars form a crucial component of drone counter-systems, enabling effective multi-layer monitoring of protected areas without blind spots. This allows detection of unauthorized drones in all cases. The radar system incorporates multiple proprietary solutions, enabling configuration for specific client requirements. Two versions are available: a stationary type for permanent protection of specific areas or facilities, and a mobile type for flexible deployment based on existing needs. Regardless of type, the radar system ensures optimal effectiveness for intended applications. Important: The drone counter-systems are weather-resistant and comply with MIL-STD-810 damage resistance standards.

Radar-Based Drone Counter-System Components:

  • Visual Sensor – Automatic camera targeting following radar drone detection. Equipped with day/night cameras (PTZ) with variable zoom and thermal imaging. The multispectral head can be additionally equipped with a laser rangefinder.
  • Acoustic Sensor – Consists of a microphone array (e.g., 8-element) with digital beam forming. This enables acoustic drone detection and position determination.
  • RF Sensor – A radio wave analyzer. Analysis focuses on detecting specific transmission types: e.g., drone operator control signals, video stream transmission.
  • Software – An integration platform collecting information from all available sensors. The software provides operators with complete situational awareness and enables rapid decision-making.

How does the drone counter-system operate?
Upon drone detection, an alarm is transmitted to the monitoring center. The operator’s screen immediately displays the camera feed. The camera continuously tracks the target through video analysis and precision radar guidance. Based on all available information, the system operator can initiate drone neutralization using a jammer.
